Zardari may lose MQM today

Agha Khalid
KARACHI: The time limit sought by President Asif Ali Zardari for redressal of the reservations of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) is ending today (Sunday).

Well-placed sources told this scribe that if the president failed to make “clear announcements” today (Sunday), then the MQM will permanently part ways with the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).

The most important among the MQM demands is the government’s disassociation from the People’s Amn Committee and action against 300 criminals. The MQM has already presented a list of its demands to the PPP in the earlier meetings. The Muttahida is also seeking a clear announcement regarding action against Sindh Home Minister Zulfiqar Mirza.

The sudden arrival of President Zardari in Karachi and announcement of a meeting with the MQM delegation strengthened speculations that today’s meeting will be decisive.

Sources in the MQM said that if the president did not make the announcement for redressal of their grievances, which was promised during a meeting at the Aiwan-e-Sadr a week ago, the MQM will say goodbye to the PPP.

Important MQM leaders told this correspondent on condition of anonymity that the ball was now in the court of President Zardari. They said the time of assurances was now gone.

Although, the MQM leaders didn’t reveal details of their demands presented to President Zardari, sources said dissociation from the Amn Committee and action against 300 criminals are among the top demands of the MQM. The MQM also wants visible action against Zulfiqar Mirza to satisfy its voters. Source : The News

Altaf calls for promoting tolerance to save country

Muttahida Qaumi Movement founder Altaf Hussain has said religious extremism, bigotry and intolerance are pulling down the country and in order to save the country from utter devastation it is necessary to promote the principles of harmony, toleration and live and let live.

He said this while talking to a delegation of NGOs at Nine-Zero by telephone on Wednesday. Members of the Coordination Committee were also present on the occasion.

The MQM chief said Islam guarantees protection to the life and property and places of worship of all non-Muslims. The founder the country, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, had made it clear in his speech to the Constituent Assembly on August 11, 1947 that the followers of all the religions would have the freedom to worship in the country according to their beliefs, but unfortunately religious extremism and bigotry was encouraged that had brought the country to the edge of the precipice, he said.

Hussain remarked that the situation had come to a point where even mosques, Imambargahs, shrines of saints, religious gatherings and even funeral processions were not safe from terrorists and suicide attacks and bomb blasts had become common.

“All this terrorism is being carried out in the name of Islam which is tarnishing the image of Islam and the Muslims throughout the world.” Condemning the murder of Punjab governor Salman Taseer and federal minister for minorities Shahbaz Bhatti, he said that such incidents were deepening a sense of insecurity in the minorities.

Hussain said the MQM considered that it was imperative to create the feeling of security in the minorities, and people belonging to various segments of society must come forward to achieve that goal. He said it was necessary to promote the principles of toleration and live and let live in order to free the country from the menace of terrorism.

Hussain said he personally opposed the use of the term “minority” for the non-Muslims. “I consider all citizens of the country as equal irrespective of their religion, religious persuasion and beliefs. I stand for religious and sectarian harmony and dignity of human beings.”
